Many different examples of faux paintings were nearly perfectly preserved during the excavations at Pompeii.
Faux Treatments

“Faux finishing” is often misunderstood as being a term synonymous with “decorative finishing.” Technically, the term “faux” encompasses a very specific category of decorative finishing in which highly trained artists manipulate paints and/or plasters to closely imitate the look and texture of other materials. For example, some of the more frequently imitated materials include stone, marble, wood, and fabric. Faux finishing is among the most technical styles of decorative finishing Often requiring complex and intricate procedures, it takes much skill and training in order to achieve realistic results.

Faux finishing began its popularity during classical times, and has continued to be a prevalent and tasteful design element in public buildings, palaces, manors, and homes throughout the ages. As a testament to the complexity and intricacy of faux finishing, artists during the classical era often apprenticed for 10 years or more in order to master this extremely technical craft. These ancient masters prided themselves in their ability to create finishes that actually trick the viewer. At Imago Dei, our highly skilled and experienced artists continue this tradition of good craftsmanship and illusion, taking pride in their ability to create highly realistic and believable faux.
